EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
