Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Position.

On the surface, Lux might appear closer to a challenging scholarly quiz rather than a new pop record by an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Broken into four different sections and performed in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking symphonic opus exploring feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often via the prism of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone makes the work of other artists appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, with sole praise going to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions are much greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, you still desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful spirit shines brightly during a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track then segues to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely exactly know—or even wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost every track ends in a totally different point from where it started. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in English swells on a chorus that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spirals upward. That trick is repeated on a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
