The English and Welsh Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
