The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
